Despite new laws and court order, disabled veterans still barred from housing on VA campus

LOS ANGELES — Inside a small 8-by-8 shed on the sprawling West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs campus, Air Force veteran George Fleischman has been living in what was supposed to be temporary housing for more than three years.

“It’s like living in the place that you keep your lawn mower,” Fleischman said.

The tiny homes were installed after “Veterans Row,” when dozens of homeless veterans set up tents around the 388-acre campus in 2020 and 2021. The VA responded by offering temporary shelter — but for veterans like Fleischman, the short-term solution has turned into years of waiting.
